50 Miles Off Shore (and still at home)

Windjammer Captain Barry King

For more than 20 years, Barry has been at the helm of the Schooner Mary Day. Navigating, voyaging and guiding has made him a natural captain who takes pleasure in sharing his quests. He believes Maine is defined by its natural setting, especially the coast. Always longing for adventure, Barry roams the great waters exploring tucked away places on and off the map. Navigate through Barry's Windjammer blog.

We had a spectacular sail yesterday. One of the first of the season. By days end we had 50 miles under our keel since departing from Camden, and we were treated to a beautiful sunset over Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. Along the way we had the pleasure of sailing alongside the schooner Heritage. The sunlight danced on the water and the graceful sheer of her rail kept all the cameras aboard quite busy while we circumnavigated her port and starboard sides, stern and bow. They had their cameras pointing our way as well. I hope we get a chance to exchange images sometime.

We anchored at Little Cranberry Island. The small community of Islesford calls to be explored. I have been here many times over the past 30 years but I never get enough. It feels like home to be anchored here. We start with a hike to the back beach where the tide-washed stones sing their clickety clack song to the waves. The small artists shops are not quite ready for our early arrival. I visit the small church where light filtering through stained glass warms my soul. A skirmish occurred here in Hadlock Cove during the War of 1812 between the US and British. I have ordered the crew to take to the small boats to allow a reenactment for the guests, water balloons for armament. I am mindful of how blessed we are, to be in this beautiful place with such good company, and a view from an office window that can't be beat.

Editor's Notes

Mount Desert Island is the largest island in Maine and hosts famous residents throughout the summer. Part of Acadia National Park, many people come for the beauty, countless trails and nature areas set aside for all types of activities. Park Loop Road is a well-liked and popular route within the park that includes many points of interest along the way. Thunder Hole, Sand Beach and Cadillac Mountain are not to be missed. From May 26 through Oct 19, vehicle reservations are required for Cadillac Summit Road between sunrise and sunset.

The Cranberry Isles are located just southeast of Mount Desert Island. Little Cranberry Island has a lot for visitors to see and do on land, not just on the water. The artists' galleries are one of the most impressive and offer one of a kind Maine art.

Recognized by Yachting Magazine as one of the Year's Best events, the Penobscot Bay Rendezvous is Maine's most exciting sail and powerboat regatta of the season.

The Maine Coast Heritage Trust conserves and stewards Maine's coastal lands and islands for their renowned scenic beauty, outdoor recreational opportunities, ecological diversity and working landscapes. Appreciate all this when using The Maine Island Trail, a water trail spanning nearly 200 islands and coastal sites along the 375 miles of the coast of Maine.
