36 Hours in Norway

The small town of Norway has outsized charm and an abundance of outdoor recreation to enjoy all year. Play a round of golf on the Norway Country Club’s 9-hole course which has beautiful views of the White Mountains and Lake Pennesseewassee. The lake has a public boat launch, and visitors love fishing, picnicking, swimming and waterskiing. Overlooking Lake Penneseewassee, the Roberts Farm Preserve is a popular spot for hiking and biking in warmer months and snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on groomed trails in winter. The warming hut has free Nordic ski equipment and snowshoe rentals for use on-site as well. There is an annual Snowshoe Festival at the preserve, with snowshoe races, a contra dance, and many other activities and events.

Stroll along Main Street and discover an array of independent shops. Enjoy Tribune Books & Gifts with their cozy reading nook or The Dragon’s Lair for games and comics. There are several delightful gift shops like The Woods Maine Shop, along with antiques and vintage shops, too. Norway has a vibrant arts community with galleries and studios lining the streets. There is a New Balance manufacturing factory in town and a factory outlet in nearby Oxford if you need a new pair of kicks.

Nearby in South Paris, Celebration Barn Theater offers workshops and summer residencies for physical theater artists along with performances for the public. When you’re ready for a meal, consider 290 Maine Street, Cafe Nomad or Dolce Amici, with Italian cuisine, cocktails and gelato. Norway Brewing is a family-owned microbrewery serving seasonal foods with local ingredients and an outdoor seating area. You can also venture to Oxford for the Oxbow Beer Garden with its restaurant, bar and event space in a renovated 200-year-old barn. It is conveniently located by an extensive Nordic skiing trail system.

After a busy day, enjoy a stay at The Norway Inn in the heart of town, the Hillside Cottages which offers fully equipped kitchens, or the historic Bear Mountain Inn in nearby Waterford.
