Saddleback Ledge
Saddleback Ledge is a treacherous, barren rock heap slumped in the sea between Isle au Haut and Vinalhaven. The light station was built upon those rocks in 1839. Its light rises just 54 feet above the water. Over the decades, the tower was dashed by wind, waves and - during a 1927 storm - a flock of seabirds. It was often impossible to land personnel and provisions, due to bad weather. The light was automated in 1954.
