Rangeley Lake in Maine.

Rangeley Lake in Maine.

Rangeley, Maine is in the heart of Maine’s Lakes & Mountains Region. Found there is Rangeley Lake, known for its brook trout and landlocked salmon. Rangeley Lake is 6,000 acres with a maximum depth of 149 feet. You can expect to find landlocked salmon in the four- to six-pound range with larger fish possible. Brook trout typically range from 12 to18 inches. You should note that the use of live bait is prohibited. While most anglers target landlocked salmon right after ice-out in May through the end of June, you may also be able to find a significant number off our pound-plus brook trout throughout the summer and into the fall.

The lake is surrounded by high mountains covered with fir and spruce trees with plenty of accessible shoreline. Boat launch facilities are located in downtown Rangeley, at Rangeley Lake State Park on the southern shore of the lake. The area is home to a number of Registered Maine Guides. In fact, Rangeley is home to the first registered Maine Guide, a woman, “Fly Rod” Crosby—and you can stay at one of the same camps that “sports” frequented in her day.
