The fertile Kennebec Valley is one of Maine’s best regions to find you-pick apple orchards. Many Maine orchards have unusual varieties like Spencer and Winesap, and it is fun to taste the difference. You can bring a picnic or purchase a snack from one of the on-site farm stores and enjoy a meal under the apple trees.
Lakeside Orchards in Manchester, a popular spot, offers you-pick apples as well as a tasty menu and farm store. The Apple Farm in Fairfield specializes in old-time varieties that are indigenous to the region like Macs, Northern Spy, Golden Russet, Pearmain and Winter Banana. In Madison, North Star Orchards has 35 acres of apple trees and a farm store. Outland Farm in Pittsfield manages a holistic orchard using no treatments, organic or otherwise, to grow their varieties of apples. In Skowhegan, the six-generation Cayford Orchards has a wide variety of apples to pick from mid-August through October.
