Best Places to Go Apple Picking in Central Maine

Region: Kennebec Valley
Activities: apple picking, picnics
Family friendly

Apple picking season is upon us at last! It’s time to head out into the sun and bring home your favorite varieties of apples, from Maine’s tasty McIntosh and Northern Spies, to Red and Golden Delicious. Will your apples end up in pies, sauce, fresh apple salads or dipped in peanut butter? There’s really no wrong way to enjoy a fresh apple.

The fertile Kennebec Valley is one of Maine’s best regions to find you-pick apple orchards. Many Maine orchards have unusual varieties like Spencer and Winesap, and it is fun to taste the difference. You can bring a picnic or purchase a snack from one of the on-site farm stores and enjoy a meal under the apple trees.

Lakeside Orchards in Manchester, a popular spot, offers you-pick apples as well as a tasty menu and farm store. The Apple Farm in Fairfield specializes in old-time varieties that are indigenous to the region like Macs, Northern Spy, Golden Russet, Pearmain and Winter Banana. In Madison, North Star Orchards has 35 acres of apple trees and a farm store. Outland Farm in Pittsfield manages a holistic orchard using no treatments, organic or otherwise, to grow their varieties of apples. In Skowhegan, the six-generation Cayford Orchards has a wide variety of apples to pick from mid-August through October.
