The Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts in Edgecomb holds workshops and residencies for ceramic artists. Each year, more than 100 people spend their time creating, firing up the kilns and crafting pieces from clay that is made on-site. The center uses the marine clay left behind from when the campus was a brick factory. For beginners, there are spring and fall workshops open to the public, and every year over the first weekend in October, Maine Craft Weekend welcomes visitors to campus to view the apprentice exhibitions.

The world-renowned Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, situated on the shores of Penobscot Bay on Deer Isle, has a selective application process for its in-demand craft workshops. However, it also offers a number of public programs, from artist presentations and community “make-and-take” workshops to studio walk-throughs and guided campus tours (pre-registration required).

If you want to try your hand at furniture building or you’re just looking to polish your craft, the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship is the place to be. Offering 9-month-long professional programs, shorter intensive courses and basic workshops for beginners, the Center has something to teach everyone. All bases are covered, from fundamental woodworking classes to wood-turning and fine cabinetry, wood crafters of all levels can expand their knowledge and skill.

If physical theater is your art, apply for a spot at Celebration Barn. Nestled in the foothills of Western Maine, the Barn offers a full season of intensive workshops with world-class teachers in techniques from clowning and buffoon, to improv and movement theater. Or simply watch actors in their element when you attend one of the summer season shows.

The Maine College of Art & Design in Portland offers continuing education programs for adults and youth, ranging from one-day sessions to multi-week classes in topics such as printmaking, photography ceramics, painting and songwriting.
