Goose Rocks Lighthouse

A dangerous, nearly submerged ledge lies just below the surface of the water in the Fox Islands Thoroughfare, the busy passage between North Haven and Vinalhaven. Long known as a serious hazard to navigation, this “killer ledge” prompted the construction of a distinctive spark plug–style lighthouse to clearly mark the spot and warn mariners to steer clear. Its compact but sturdy design was well suited to the rough waters and exposed conditions of the thoroughfare.

Goose Rocks Lighthouse was built in 1890 and has since played a vital role in protecting vessels traveling between the islands and the mainland. Today, the light is automated and powered by solar energy, yet it continues to serve the same essential purpose of maritime safety. Unlike many offshore lights, Goose Rocks offers unique opportunities for the public. For information about visiting the island or even staying overnight at the lighthouse, interested visitors can contact Beacon Preservation, Inc., which helps preserve and manage this historic site.
