Egg Rock Light

Most of the lighthouses in Maine are tall and stately, but Egg Rock Light is surprisingly squat and square, with the black nub of a light on top. This lighthouse was built off the coast of Bar Harbor in 1875, and has been rebuilt numerous times, as its exposed location has left it vulnerable to fierce storms. Today, a boathouse, oil house and generator house still stand along with the lighthouse.

You can view Egg Rock Light by car from the Schooner Head parking lot, which is off Park Loop Road in the Bar Harbor section of Acadia National Park. The best way to see this lighthouse, however, is on a sightseeing boat tour or whale watching tour from Bar Harbor. Along the way, you’ll pass by other islands and see a variety of wildlife, such as osprey, eagles, porpoises, seals and seabirds.
