Children's Museums

Discover a world of imaginative play and creative learning at Maine’s children’s museums. Three museums are devoted solely to children: The Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine, in Portland; the Maine Discovery Museum, in Bangor; and the Coastal Children's Museum in Rockland. The Children’s Discovery Museum of Central Maine recently re-opened in Waterville in a new space!

Interactive exhibits and hands-on play allow children to explore the world at their own pace. They can pretend to visit a Maine campground; captain a lobster boat and learn about the state's fishing heritage; or fell trees deep in the Maine woods and practice sustainable forestry. They can reach into touch tanks stocked with sea critters, discover native animals and birds and explore Maine's ecosystem along a 20-foot waterway.

Your children can also learn about the state's ties to some of America's most noted children's book authors and illustrators, including E. B. White (Charlotte's Web), Barbara Cooney (Miss Rumphius), Robert McCloskey(Blueberries for Sal and One Morning in Maine), Margaret Wise Brown (Good Night Moon) and Dahlov Ipcar (illustrator of Brown's The Little Fisherman and author/illustrator of Dahlov Ipcar's Maine Alphabet).
