Farmers’ Markets & Farm Activities
There’s no doubt about it, the freshest ingredients and seasonal bounty are what make food in Maine so exceptional. From wild blueberries that flavor our specialty cocktails and wines to oyster farms that produce the perfect briny-sweet bite served up on a half shell, the fields and farms in Maine offer a diverse and colorful harvest. Maine’s farms go well beyond delicious foods, too; lavender farms produce oils, soaps, candles and more, and Christmas tree farms offer the chance to choose a great big fir tree of your childhood dreams—along with wagon rides and hot chocolate for the ultimate holiday experience.
Many Maine farms offer engaging activities for kids and adults alike, so you can discover and appreciate how farm products come to fruition, from meeting friendly animals to touring farms and sampling goods. Pineland Farms in New Gloucester is a working farm with year-round activities for the whole family. The popular pick-your-own option at Maine farms is the chance to get out in the fields or orchards and take home a harvest. The fourth Sunday in July is always Open Farm Day and a wonderful opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at the working farms throughout the state.
For a unique experience, tour an alpaca farm and meet the teddy-bear-like creatures whose fuzz makes for amazing yarn. Fall is a great time to visit a Maine farm to pick apples and treat yourself with freshly made and still-warm cider donuts. Or come in the spring for the annual Maine Maple Sunday event, where sugarhouses across the state celebrate the sweet delight and offer maple syrup farm tours.
If you’re short on time, Maine farmers markets and farm stands offer seasonal produce and goods, any time of year. Indoors or out, you’re sure to find local goodness to inspire your next meal or cherished gift.
Visit the gallery at Maine Farmland Trust for a glimpse of agriculture through art. Some of the artwork is available for purchase and helps support Maine farms.
