Abdi Iftin—naturalized American, former refugee, and author of Call Me American—shares his journey from civil-war Somalia to the state of Maine. Along the way, he taught himself English, reported as a guerrilla journalist, and navigated the U.S. immigration system despite being denied a visa twice and facing repeated setbacks.
So how did he make it here after all those denials? What did the process really look like? And what was it like to finally become a naturalized U.S. citizen?
He'll read from his memoir, reflect on what comes next, and take questions from the audience.
BIO: Abdi Iftin is the award-winning author of Call Me American and a TEDx speaker whose story has been featured on NPR, This American Life, and Time magazine.
