Despite its relatively small population, Maine is home to many highly regarded film festivals each year, spotlighting independent and international films filled with recognizable faces and future stars. These events provide platforms for emerging talent and offer audiences a chance to engage with diverse storytelling.

Maine Jewish Film Festival, March

The MJFF showcases films that explore the global Jewish experience, fostering dialogue and understanding. Screenings are held in various cities, including Portland, Lewiston, Brunswick and Waterville.

Maine International Film Festival, July

Taking place in Waterville, MIFF spans 10 days and features around 100 films, including world premieres and classic revivals. The festival emphasizes works from Maine and New England filmmakers.

Maine Outdoor Film Festival, July

MOFF in Portland presents films focusing on outdoor adventure, conservation and our planet’s complexity. The flagship festival takes place each summer, with traveling screenings and off-season events scheduled throughout the year.

Vacationland Film Festival, August

Hosted in Biddeford at the City Theater, this festival builds community around Maine-centric films. In addition to a full lineup of screenings, other festival events include panels and parties.

Camden International Film Festival, September

CIFF in Camden, Rockport and Rockland presents a selection of documentary films from around the world over the course of four days. The roster also includes filmmaker Q&As and interactive installations.

International Maritime Film Festival, September

Bucksport hosts the IMFF, which features films celebrating maritime heritage and oceanic themes at the Alamo Theatre — subjects vary from voyaging and racing to boatbuilding, history, the environment and more.
