Bear Island Lighthouse

Bear Island Lighthouse, constructed in 1839, is a historic and picturesque beacon located at the entrance to Somes Sound in Maine. Situated on Bear Island, this lighthouse is part of Acadia National Park but is not open to the public. However, it remains a popular sight for visitors who wish to admire it from the water or the mainland. The best views of the Bear Island Light can be enjoyed from Shore Road in Manset or from boat and air tours. The Cranberry Isles mailboat, which serves the nearby islands, passes Bear Island daily, providing a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to view the lighthouse from the water.

The lighthouse features a tall, white cylindrical tower with a black lantern room at the top, which contrasts with the natural surroundings. Though the lighthouse is no longer actively staffed, the property remains well-maintained thanks to a private lease arrangement. The lighthouse and its keeper’s house are leased to private residents who continue to care for the historic structure and its surrounding grounds. The keeper’s house, a large, gambrel-roofed building with distinctive baby blue trim, is often compared to a French barn in its architectural style.
