Whaleback Ledge Light Station

The Whaleback Ledge Light Station marks treacherous rocks in the waters between Maine and New Hampshire. Those rocks, on the approaches to Portsmouth Harbor, claimed many ships before the station opened in 1830. The original light tower shook and leaked and threatened to fall down. It was replaced in 1872 with a tower of stout, Biddeford, Maine granite. In 1963, the light was automated. It is closed to the public, but you can see it from Fort Foster in Kittery and from the water. For more information, contact the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses.
