If you’re convinced that camping means suffering around smoky campfires and shivering in damp sleeping bags, it’s time to visit one of Maine’s private campgrounds. There, you’ll enjoy waterslides, craft beers, beaches, ocean sunrises and even a cozy cabin or two.

Maine’s private campgrounds are as varied as the landscape itself. You can camp on an island. Or find a spot in an RV resort on the coast. Choose a campground with sea-kayak parking; choose a campground with parking for your whitewater boat. There are campgrounds with playgrounds for kids and a campground close to a craft brewery. There are campgrounds with pool tables, ping pong, golf, marinas, peddle boats, horseshoe pits and barbecues. There are campgrounds that love dogs and campgrounds that love – and host – bluegrass festivals.

How to sort them all out? Start with the Maine Campground Owners Association, which can help you find the perfect spot depending on where in Maine you’re going or on what you’d like to do.
