Featured Maine Makers: J Schatz

About J Schatz

The J Schatz studio is situated on the lovely Powder Hill Farm in West Boothbay Harbor. Here, in a repurposed barn, Jim Schatz and Peter Souza design and create handmade modern ceramics and sculpture. The studio is both a workspace and gallery where the partners in both life and business produce yearly editions of their signature impossibly glossy home ceramic ware.

What They Make

The modest egg: the inspiration that first led Jim to create his signature egg lamps, and later his lush colored ceramic egg-shaped bird feeders and houses that attract fowl and folk alike. Peter and Jim also make handmade mobiles, lighting, décor and tableware – all vibrating with color and whimsy. Using non-toxic, lead-free glaze, their precise method creates a mirror-like sheen on each one of kind piece of art.

Where You Can Find Their Products

The J Schatz collection is available for purchase in the gallery and online. Jim and Peter are happy to give tours of the studio and gallery; contact them to schedule a tour. They also create custom made pieces.

Peter’s solo work is also displayed in the gallery and can be found online.
