Wendell Gilley Museum is the primary showcase for the work of world-renowned bird carver Wendell Gilley, a Southwest Harbor native and one of the pioneers of decorative bird carving in America. Exhibitions feature Gilley’s meticulously carved birds, reflecting a career that spanned more than five decades and produced what he estimated to be thousands of carvings. An author of The Art of Bird Carving: A Guide to a Fascinating Hobby, Gilley helped shape the field through both his artwork and teaching. In addition to exhibitions, the museum hosts events, workshops and educational programs that explore carving, nature studies and creative expression for visitors of all ages.
