Hats About the House
In the Wadsworth-Longfellow House A hat makes a statement about a person—how a hat is worn, its color, and style communicated the societal standing of its wearer as well as their economic ability to purchase such an accessory. At one time, it was expected that every man and woman should wear some sort of hat when out and about. That fashion faded for a time, but hats are making a comeback. Visit the Wadsworth-Longfellow House this fall to see a selection of the beautiful, fashionable, and sometimes awkward hats from the Maine Historical Society collection. This brief exhibit was curated by MHS' Adjunct Curator of Historic Costumes, Jacqueline Field, a textile and dress historian and author.
