Tate House Museum
The only pre-Revolutionary home in Greater Portland open to the public
The Tate House is the only pre-Revolutionary home in Greater Portland open to the public. It offers an insightful glimpse of 18th-century life in Maine.
This architecturally significant Georgian home has been accurately restored to reflect the lifestyle of the Tate family in the 1750s. George Tate was the Senior Mast Agent for the British Royal Navy, who oversaw the cutting and shipping of white pines from Maine to England. This position assured Tate's success. His status was reflected in his beautiful home, gardens and grounds.
