We promise you’ll learn something new, and make new friends along the way, the very first time you climb with us! First Timers often choose to take one of the following:

INTRO TO CLIMBING CLASS: This is where you learn to rock climb. In this two hour course, you’ll learn all the fundamentals to being a top rope climber and belayer, including basic climbing knots, proper belay technique, and communication. This class also includes a short introduction to climbing movement and bouldering, route reading, and instruction in how to use our auto belays. Registrants must be 14 years of age, no climbing experience required. SCHEDULE: Weekdays from 6:00-8:00 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00-3:00 pm. Prior Reservation Strongly Encouraged. PRICE: $40 includes two hours of instruction, rental gear and a free two week membership trial.

OPEN CLIMB (summer months only): The perfect option for those who want to try out climbing. You don’t need any reservations, it’s perfect for all ages, and no experience is necessary. Simply walk into Salt Pump on any weekend day from 11am to 4pm. Our Open Climb Sessions are first come first serve, include all necessary rental equipment and a dedicated Salt Pump guide to belay and encourage you up three different rope climbs. Absolutely no age or experience restrictions! SCHEDULE: Saturday and Sunday 11am-4pm No Reservations. PRICE: $30 each. Includes all rental equipment and guided experience on three (3) different roped climbs.

Salt Pump also offers memberships, after school programs, summer camps, yoga and fitness classes, parties and overnights and much more. The brand new 10,000 square foot facility features 45 foot high lead and top rope walls, kids climbing walls, bouldering, fitness equipment, yoga room and an attached deck overlooking a pond ringed by birch trees. Conveniently located less than a mile off 1-95 in Scarborough, minutes from downtown Portland.
