A common Cormorant, or "Shag" as the locals call them, can swim down to 100' to find their dinner. As they have no oil in their wings to keep them buoyant, they need to spread their wings after fishing to dry themselves. Some think these an ugly bird, but take a close look at those blue eyes!

Captain Dave's Maine Photo Safaris

Guided photography/sightseeing private boat trips in Midcoast Maine.

Captain Dave's Photo Safaris are led by Captain Dave Cleaveland, aboard the 22' center console "Rockin Spartan". Captain Dave is an award winning, professional, commercial, photographer with over 20 years of experience in Maine and around New England.

The tour leaves historic Richmond, Maine, and heads down the Kennebec River past Bath Iron Works, 4 lighthouses, a set of historical Range Lights, and Fort Popham. Weather and tide permitting, we can head out to Seguin Island Lighthouse, 3 miles offshore.

From there, we'll head over to the Sheepscot River past working lobster boats, seals, eagles, islands, and 4 more lighthouses, and finally into Boothbay Harbor, where we will work our way around the harbor and even make a quick stop in town if you'd like. Then back in the boat and out the Townsend Gut (a narrow stretch of water) and back across the Sheepscot River and into the Sasanoa River, past Robinhood Marina, and through both Upper and Lower Hells Gates, returning into the Kennebec River and home to Richmond.

As Seguin Island, The Cuckolds, and Ram Island Lighthouses are all in open ocean, they are all weather/tide dependent.

Your boat tour can be a simple sight seeing tour, or we can work at getting into the right positions for photographing seals, eagles, lighthouses, and Maine's rugged coastline. Need help discovering how to use your camera? Dave has been teaching Adult Ed photography classes for years, so this is also a private, personalized, photography class. I like to keep trips small, and we are geared towards 2-3 photographers at a time, although we can take up to 6 people. The Rockin Spartan is a 22' center console, so space is limited. And as weather and temperature can change quickly in Maine, so warm and dry clothing is a must!
