1761 Pownalborough Courthouse stands on its original site along the Kennebec River in Dresden, offering a rare window into Maine’s colonial past. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this landmark invites visitors to explore the historic building through guided tours and museum exhibits that trace its role in early legal, civic and everyday life. Outdoors, guests can picnic on the riverfront grounds, wander the period garden or follow a nature trail along the water’s edge. A newly developed trail system in the forest across the road adds opportunities for hiking and quiet exploration. The adjacent cemetery includes graves of Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War veterans. Living history encampments bring 18th-century activities to life, and the site also hosts tours, special events and private rentals.
