Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory together offer a combined experience of Maine history and elevated river views along the Penobscot River. Fort Knox is one of the best-preserved Civil War–era forts in the country, built of granite and featuring passageways, ramparts and interpretive exhibits that explore 19th-century military life and engineering.
The Penobscot Narrows Observatory rises above the river atop the cable-stayed Penobscot Narrows Bridge and is accessed by elevator. From the observation level, visitors can take in sweeping views of the Penobscot River Valley and surrounding landscape. Both sites are also used for special events and gatherings.
