Heron Neck Lighthouse
Heron Neck Light was built in 1854 and has stood watch over Penobscot Bay ever since. Though the lighthouse is not open to the public, it can be admired by boat, where its classic profile rises dramatically from the surrounding sea.
Set atop rocks at the southern tip of Greens Island, the white tower capped with a vivid red lantern marks the entrance to Hurricane Sound. Its elevated perch provides sweeping views of the open bay and the working waters that have sustained coastal communities for generations. The light plays a crucial navigational role, guiding mariners safely toward Carver’s Harbor, the bustling seaport on Vinalhaven Island known for its lobster fleet and granite heritage.
Over the decades, the station has weathered fierce nor’easters, dense fog and pounding surf, a testament to its sturdy 19th-century construction. Today, even as modern navigation technology has evolved, Heron Neck Light remains an active aid to navigation and a beloved landmark along Maine’s storied Midcoast.
