Browns Head Light Station

Built in 1832, Browns Head Light Station is one of Maine’s historic maritime beacons, located on the northwestern tip of Vinalhaven Island. This charming lighthouse has guided mariners for nearly two centuries through the narrow and often-foggy seaway between Vinalhaven and neighboring North Haven Island. The current tower, which replaced the original in 1857, stands beside a classic keeper’s house.

It is currently owned and maintained by the Friends of Browns Head Lighthouse, a nonprofit organization. While the interior of the lighthouse is not open to the public, visitors can walk the grounds, take photos and soak in the sweeping views of Penobscot Bay.

To get there, hop on the Maine State Ferry from the Rockland terminal, which offers daily, year-round service to Vinalhaven Island. The scenic 75-minute ride offers views of lobster boats, seabirds and Maine’s craggy coastline. Once on Vinalhaven, a drive or bike ride across the island leads to Browns Head Light Road, where the lighthouse awaits at the end.
