Winter Spectator Sports

Mainers aren’t satisfied with just napping in their recliners all winter. When they’re not playing winter sports, they’re out watching them. When you visit, join in! Choices range from minor league basketball to major league tobogganing (really).

Catch the Maine Red Claws at the Portland Expo Building from November to March. The Red Claws are part of the NBA G League, NBA’s official minor league, and is affiliated with the Boston Celtics.

Sled Dog Racing

Winter brings top dog-sled teams to the state to race in the Can-Am Crown.

Pond Hockey

Maine’s annual Pond Hockey Classic shoots – and scores – at Snow Pond in Sidney. Players and spectators are invited to lace up their skates and duck boots.

Toboggan Championships

Watch people dressed as penguins, Scots warriors, bananas and space aliens compete in the U.S. National Toboggan Championships in Camden. Yes, it’s fun and despite the costumes, the competition is serious.

University of Maine sports

Division I teams of the University of Maine in Orono lead the state's college sports action. In the winter, you can watch football, hockey, or men's and women's basketball. Check the university websitefor schedules and ticket information.
