Winter Spectator Sports
You can find spectator sports both indoors and outdoors when you visit Maine in winter. Your choices range from pond hockey to basketball and more.
Pond Hockey and Dogsledding
Maine’s annual Pond Hockey Classic shoots – and scores – at Snow Pond in Sidney. Players and spectators are invited to lace up their skates and duck boots. Winter also brings top dog-sled teams to the state to race in the Plum Creek Wilderness Sled Dog Race and the Can-Am Crown.
If you're a basketball fan, you can catch the Maine Red Claws at the Portland Expo Building from November to March. This NBA Development League team is affiliated with the Boston Celtics and the Charlotte Bobcats and it features former college stars.
The Division I teams of the University of Maine in Orono lead the state's college sports action. In the winter, you can watch football, hockey, or men's and women's basketball. Check the university's website for schedules and ticket information.
You can also watch such teams as The Bearded Ladies and Little Red Sliding Hood compete in the U.S. National Toboggan Championships in Camden.
