Winter Activities

Skiing & Riding in Maine

Sunday River

Sunday River

Skiers and riders give Maine's ski areas rave reviews for the state's mountain vistas, abundant snowfall, impeccably groomed trails and tree-studded glades. Skiing in Maine is the perfect winter activity. Choose from more than 575 downhill skiing and snowboarding trails on thousands of acres across the state. Or take in the landscape cross-country skiing or snowshoeing at any of the state’s many Nordic ski areas.

No matter what your interests or abilities may be, you’ll find the perfect run or the perfect trail. Whether you like your trails backcountry wild or meticulously groomed, your runs smooth and scenic or filled with heartstopping vertical drops, it’s here in Maine. Downhill skiers will love the powerful snowmaking, short lines and high-speed lifts found at Maine’s ski resorts. Snowboarders can challenge themselves at terrain parks with super-pipes, half-pipes, ramps, rails, jumps, boxes and many other elements.

You can also learn more about Maine’s skiing heritage at the Ski Museum of Maine and the Maine Nordic Heritage Center.

You'll find a variety of accommodations, from big mountain destination ski resorts to inns to B&Bs, all with a range of apres ski entertainment and dining options. If you're traveling with kids, you may want to try one of Maine’s mid-size mountains, which offer many of the same amenities as the big resorts but on a smaller scale and slower pace that works well for families. Or trek across the state with a lodge-to-lodge or hut-to-hut cross-country skiing adventure, with on-trail accommodations ranging from cozy off-grid cabins to comfortable lodges.

Maine Huts & Trails offers a world-class accommodations in eco-lodges sprinkled across the trails that carve their way through the state’s pristine western wilderness. The Appalachian Mountain Club also maintains a network of lodges, cabins and huts for those skiing along the Appalachian Trail.
