Summer Spectator Sports

If you visit Maine in the summer, you can watch auto races, motorcycle races and harness races. You can also watch Maine's baseball teams race for their leagues' pennants—and possibly see future major league baseball stars in action.

Auto Racing

Stock car racing has a long history in Maine. You can find weekend races at asphalt and dirt tracks from Scarborough to Caribou. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, American-Canadian Tour and Pro All-Star Series races are held on Maine racetracks from May through September. The state also has two drag strips that offer car, truck or motorcycle racing.

Horse Racing

Weekly harness races are held throughout the spring, summer and fall at tracks in Scarborough and Bangor. Races also take place at nine agricultural fairs throughout the state from July through October. For more information, visit the website of The Maine Harness Horsemen's Association.

You can watch The Portland Sea Dogs—the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox—play from April through September at Hadlock Field. Maine's only professional baseball team, the Sea Dogs show their family pride with a 37-foot-tall replica of Fenway Park's Green Monster. You can also watch summer baseball at historic Goodall Park in Sanford, where Babe Ruth played his last game as a member of the Red Sox. Here, the Sanford Mainers compete in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. The Mainers feature top college players from all NCAA divisions.
