Summer vacation begins soon, and our family is planning to soak up as much of this gorgeous season in Maine as possible! At dinner recently, we came up with a long list of activities we're looking forward to experiencing this season. Here are a few that top our list:

1. Go on an island adventure

Our family can't wait to take the ferry to Peaks Island and explore the island on two-seater bikes. The last time we visited, the roads were dotted with lemonade stands designed by young island entrepreneurs.

Note: bicycle rentals available through Brad's Bike Rental & Repair.

2. Check out a food festival

We've always wanted to return to Machias for the Wild Blueberry Festival (August). We can't wait to see the children's parade, check out the artisan market, and sample as many blueberry treats as our bellies allow!

3. Explore new trails

We're making it our family goal to check out as many new trails as possible. This season, we're going to hike the gorgeous shoreline trails in Cape Elizabeth (and then cool off at Crescent Beach State Park).

4. Visit a new garden

We love public gardens, but we've never explored the stunning Asticou Azalea Garden on Mount Desert Island. We'll pack a picnic, bring our camera, and take a leisurely stroll. Can't wait!

5. Experience a traditional clambake

It's been too long since we've visited the wonderful folks at Cabbage Island Clambakes in Boothbay. The ferry ride alone is such a treat, and the food on the island is incredible — lobster, steamers, corn on the cob, boiled potatoes, and the biggest (and most delicious) piece of blueberry cake ever for dessert. Yum!
