Early every September, you and your family can explore over two dozen historic Maine lights during Maine Open Lighthouse Day. During this event, some historic lights will be open both on-shore and off-shore.
You can take the ferry out to Islesboro and visit the Keeper’s House, Sailor’s Museum, Oil House, and Gift Shop at the Grindle Point Light Station, climb the tower to see the Fresnel lens at the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, or perhaps be one of the lucky few who get to tour the lighthouse tower of Maine’s most iconic lighthouse, the Portland Head Light – the tower is only available on Open Lighthouse Day to a limited number of visitors.
Climb the spiral staircase to the top for a close-up look at the lenses or simply tour the grounds.
To find out which day has been chosen for the celebration and for a full list of lighthouses, check the American Lighthouse Foundation website.
