Lobster Roll Rumble: From Vacationland to The Big Apple

Participants in The Lobster Roll Rumble [are set to] compete in New York City, putting up their best product for a discerning audience of lobster lovers from all over the Northeast. If you love sweet Maine lobster as we do, this is the food event of the season.

Of the twenty contenders in this year's rumble, four hail from our great state of Maine. Each establishment presents a unique angle that certainly gives them an edge on the competition. They also represent an aspect of Maine life and culture we love. I honestly don't know how we could choose a favorite.

The Clam Shack of Kennebunkport will be defending their title this year. Do you want to experience the most idyllic little seafood place, a snug white sided little shanty on the water's edge? You have got to stop here on your way up Maine's glorious coast. Their roll is sweet and simple, classic as a beanbag and boat shoes. With fresh lemonade, lots of fried seafood offerings and salty air, this is the picture perfect place to enjoy a summer day.

What can we expect from Eventide Oyster Company, one of foodie Portland's trendy new(ish) spots for upscale seafood done in an approachable way? Known, of course, for their raw bar, featuring superb oysters from Maine and away, they also make a mean lobster roll with an elegant twist. These guys make their own dressings and sauces, including hollandaise, mayonnaise, and brown butter vinaigrette. We know they will be one to watch.

Want to hang out with a happy crowd of locals and tourists in a cozy bar that serves dozens of craft beers? This is your place. Located in picturesque Naples in the heart of the Lakes Region, The Galley Seafood Pub is where to spend an afternoon after boating. With lots of lobster rolls to choose from – including the award-winning Zesty Lemon and one made with sweet relish – we cannot wait to taste what they bring to the rumble.

Bite Into Maine, the self-proclaimed underdog of this year's rumble, has something to prove. They did not expect to make it into the prestigious competition with just two years in the business. Their food cart, which is stationed from May through November in stunning Cape Elizabeth Park, serves a sweet Maine lobster roll in various guises. Will they win with Chipotle or Wasabi? We can't wait to taste and find out.

Our Maine thing is being outside all spring and summer, watching wild lupines bloom, eating fried clams and steamed lobster in the salty sea air, and listening to gulls and the call of ships coming in to port. We love living in Maine and traveling out, acting as ambassadors of our terrific, varied, fresh, local food scene.

The charity event is sponsored by Tasting Table and a portion of the proceeds go to Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to end childhood hunger in America. All will have a delicious time, no doubt. And best of luck to all four of our Maine representatives!

The competition for America's best lobster roll happens at the 2013 Tasting Table Lobster Roll Rumble in New York City. Now in its 4th year, it hosts 20 of the country's best lobster rolls.
