Eating in Maine: At Home, On the Town, and On the Road
When we made the decision to move to Maine, we had jobs that allowed us to live anywhere. With friends and family spread all over the US, we could have gone lots of places. We chose Maine.
Malcolm grew up here, had the most idyllic childhood, running through the woods, making forts and fording streams away from the eyes of adults but under the watchful gaze of the close-knit community in Tenants Harbor. We wanted to start a family, and knew that Maine was the place to do it.
At the same time, we could feel the food scene bubbling up and getting really good, and that was something we wanted to be a part of; making food is one way we as humans express love and tell stories, and that is something we are both very interested in. We moved to Portland for the restaurants, to Topsham to live on a farm, and to the Midcoast to reconnect with the fishermen, friends, and floods of happy memories.
Though we couldn’t have known it back then, our move back to Maine and our exploration of the food here held something else in store: The publication of our first book, entitled “Eating in Maine: At Home, On the Town, and On the Road,” published by Tilbury House, a publisher located right here in Thomaston. In this book, we’ve included 115 of our favorite recipes from our blog, FromAway.com, with a focus on comfort food, and particularly New England classics.
It’s more than a cookbook, though. We have 50 reviews of what we consider essential Maine restaurants, both those that receive crazy media attention and food industry awards and other, off-the-beaten-path stores and roadside stands that we’ve happened upon (or that have been recommended to us by our readers) that we think of as our “can’t miss” restaurants for anyone visiting the state.
The third component brings the reader on the road with us. Our state is a perfect place for a pastoral road trip, driving by lakes, through the woods, alongside the ocean, past white churches, faded barns, wild turkeys, and fields of farms and flowers. We tell you where to get the juiciest burgers, the best breakfast sandwiches, and the sweetest lobster rolls, all while taking in the scenery and meeting the characters that make the food and this place so truly special.
This book was inspired by the state of Maine. It couldn’t have been written, or be about, anywhere else. In Maine, we finally found a place where we could set ourselves to a creative endeavor, a place that encourages following your pursuits. People were generous with their time, and eager to share their knowledge and wisdom.
In Maine, there is very much a sense of camaraderie, the sense that we’re all in this together. It’s a life that can be hard but beautiful, rewarding if you are willing to work hard and do what you love. That ideal is highly valued here, and is what gave us the freedom to write this book.
Writing “Eating in Maine” allowed us to research, explore, and experience Maine through the familiar lens of the food we all eat every day. We really hope it reads like a love letter to the state, because that’s exactly what it is.
