Andrew Wyeth: Maine Watercolors, 1938 - 2008

December is the final month to enjoy Andrew Wyeth: Maine Watercolors, 1938 – 2008, an exhibit at Rockland’s Farnsworth Art Museum. It’s one of a series of Farnsworth shows this year celebrating the centennial of Wyeth’s birth. The watercolor exhibit spans Wyeth’s career and includes a study for his final work, Goodbye my Love. The exhibition is curated by Farnsworth Chief Curator Michael K. Komanecky and renowned American art scholar Henry Adams.

Wyeth, who spent many years in Maine, was one of America’s best-known and popular painters. His realist works, set in New England and the Northeast, were often moody, dark and sentimental, featuring arid fields, tattered trees and empty rooms. Some critics, and even other painters, harumphed about Wyeth’s art and celebrity. But Americans largely took to Wyeth and made him a star. He was praised in mainstream magazines like Life; his portrait, painted by his sister, graced the cover of Time.

Wyeth died in 2009, at age 91.

Andrew Wyeth: Maine Watercolors, 1938 to 2008 is open through Dec. 31 at the Farnsworth, 16 Museum St., in Rockland.
