The Maine State House

The Maine State House, the state's historic capitol, was built on Augusta's Weston Hill between 1829 and 1832. It was designed by Charles Bullfinch, America's first native-born architect. Since its construction, the State House has been renovated and expanded.

The State House includes Maine's Legislative Chambers and the Office of the Governor. Visitors can study the building's historic architecture, see displays of Maine battle flags and portraits of former Governors. For a free tour of the State House, contact the Maine State Museum.
