Orono is home to the University of Maine, the state's largest university. Orono's Main Street crosses the Stillwater River to Marsh Island, which is also bordered by the Penobscot River. The southern part of the island contains the university campus, which has recreation trails that are open to the public. You can also see concerts and national Broadway tours at the university's Collins Center for the Arts, or view exhibits on world cultures at the university's Hudson Museum.
You can go fishing on Pushaw Lake, play golf at the Penobscot Valley Country Club, or explore 10 natural areas and trail systems maintained by the Orono Land Trust—including the Orono Bog Boardwalk, a one-mile loop trail through four distinct types of peatland bog environment. The boardwalk is open from May through November. It has more than 100 species of birds and dozens of varieties of ferns, flowers and plants. You can also stop in the town office to pick up a brochure for a self-guided walking tour past the 19th-century estates built on Main Street by lumber and railroad barons and bank owners.
