Vinalhaven Historical Society Museum

Vinalhaven is one of the largest of the 14 year-round island communities remaining in Maine. The Vinalhaven Historical Society enriches the life of the island by collecting and cataloguing the fascinating history of our community.

The Society has an extensive collection of photographic, genealogical, and vital records. The Museum houses artifacts from Vinalhaven schools, homes and the Civil War, along with tools for farming, fishing, and the granite industry.

Even the society's building is historic. It was built on the mainland in 1836 as the Universalist Church of Rockland. In 1875, it was bought at auction for $300 and brought to the island. Through the years, it served as the town hall and was used by other organizations and businesses. Finally, in 1967, it became the historical society's headquarters.
