7:00 PM Saturday: annual canoe carry. Long before Europeans arrived in Aroostook, two important river chains led native Americans from the St. John River into the vast interior woodlands: the Fish River and the Aroostook River. The connection between these two waterways was a short portage between Little Machias Lake and Portage Lake. Each year, Jim Dumond leads a group of enthusiastic participants in a re-enactment of this portage. The public is welcomed and encouraged to participate in the final stage of the portage, which is the paddle across Portage Lake to the old seaplane base, where an enthusiastic crowd, including members of the Wesget Sipu Fish River Tribe, awaits. Join "les portageurs" at the bottom of the lake (near the intersection of the Maine Woods Road and West Road) by 7:00 PM. Call Jim Dumond for more information at 277-1864.

9:00 PM Saturday: A fireworks display at the Forestry Wharf on Portage Lake will begin at 9PM. If you plan to watch the display from your watercraft, please remember that the law requires you to have lights on your craft after dark.

9:00 PM Saturday: Dance to Too Far North at the Portage Hills Country Club from 9PM to midnight. For more information, contact the clubhouse at 435-8221.
