Trip Ideas: Nature & Wildlife

The Kennebec River Valley region offers visitors a wonderful combination of outdoor adventure, scenic splendor, history and culture. Famous for its whitewater rafting and snowmobiling, the region also boasts nationally known museums, Shakespearean theater, Maine’s capital city, and an international heritage corridor.

Richmond and Hallowell


Start your day in the small village of Richmond. Treat yourself to breakfast and Maine brewed coffee at Annabella’s on Front Street.

Spend the Day

Bring a picnic and take the ferry from Richmond Village (or use your own watercraft!) to Swan Island where you can appreciate the Steve Powell Wildlife Management Area. With abundant wildlife including migrating waterfowl, wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, and bald eagles. There are four miles of trails and camping available. It is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Reservations for the Ferry are required.
