Tourism’s Effects: Positive & Profound

Tourism is one of Maine’s largest and most vibrant industries. The Maine Office of Tourism (MOT), a division of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, markets Maine as a tourism destination and helps steer Maine’s tourism industry.

Maine’s tourism industry continues to grow. Total recent tourism expenditures were over 8.6 billion dollars a year in 2022.  Tourism supported 151,000 people, and contributed nearly 5.6 billion dollars to Maine’s households.

Maine Destination Management Plan

The Maine Office of Tourism has developed a state-wide destination management plan. Together with Maine tourism industry stakeholders and residents we have established benchmarks that support destination stewardship, and help balance our industry’s growth with residential quality of life and the inherent qualities that have always drawn people to Maine for vacationing and active, outdoor recreation pursuits.
