Great Duck Island

X

Located about five miles from the mainland, Great Duck Island has been a favored home for seabirds. The light station was built in 1890. The Nature Conservancy now owns the island and manages it as a bird sanctuary. The College of the Atlantic owns the lighthouse and keeper’s house, which are used for ecological research. You can take a boat tour that offers views from the water. Occasional birdwatching tours are also available. A burial ground nearby has the grave of three shipwrecked men found frozen to death in each other's arms.
