Ghostly Tune

Turtle-shaped Seguin Island, the site of Maine’s first offshore station, is one of the foggiest places in the nation, socked in for as much as one-third of every year.

To relieve his wife’s boredom in this bleak locale, one keeper bought her a player piano. Unfortunately, it had just one tune, and she played it over and over again. This drove the keeper mad. He took an ax to the piano and upon hearing her complaint, turned the ax on her before killing himself.

Later keepers and visitors have reported hearing a phantom piano in the lighthouse, and some people say that the song can still be heard drifting down the Kennebec River on foggy nights.
