Winter Spectator Sports

X

You can find spectator sports both indoors and outdoors when you visit Maine in winter. Your choices range from biathlons to skiing to hockey—and include such unique events as The North American Wife Carrying Championships.

Biathlons

Winter biathlon venues in Presque Isle and Fort Kent annually host World Cup, Junior World Cup, Can-Am Series and U.S. National Team events. You can find more information about biathlon events at The Maine Winter Sports Center's website.

Skiing, Snowboarding and Dogsledding

Professional skiing and snowboarding tours stop at Maine mountains each year and feature Olympians, X-Games athletes, and U.S. National Team members. Visit the Ski Maine Association's website for the schedule of events. Winter also brings top dog-sled teams to the state to race in the Plum Creek Wilderness Sled Dog Race and the Can-Am Crown.

Hockey and Basketball

You can get your hockey fix at a Portland Pirates game. The Pirates play from mid-October through late April at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston. This American Hockey League team is affiliated with the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League. If you're a basketball fan, you can catch the Maine Red Claws at the Portland Expo Building from November to March. This NBA Development League team is affiliated with the Boston Celtics and the Charlotte Bobcats and it features former college stars.

College Sports

The Division I teams of the University of Maine in Orono lead the state's college sports action. In the winter, you can watch football, hockey, or men's and women's basketball. Check the university's website for schedules and ticket information.

Unique Sports

If you're looking for a less serious sporting event, you and your spouse can watch—or participate in—The North American Wife Carrying Championships in Newry. You can also watch such teams as The Bearded Ladies and Little Red Sliding Hood compete in the U.S. National Toboggan Championships in Camden.
