Falmouth

Falmouth is a delightful community just north of Portland, on Casco Bay. Although right outside the city, the town has a peaceful vibe, surrounded by plenty of nature to enjoy. In 1658, it was named Falmouth after the community in Cornwall. The Falmouth Historical Society has a museum with memorabilia and artifacts showing the town through the centuries.

Things to Do in Falmouth

To learn more about the town’s history, take a self-guided tour, courtesy of the Falmouth Historical Society. Falmouth is well-known to boaters around the world as it is home to the Portland Yacht Club, which is more than 150 years old, and the Falmouth Town Landing is the largest recreational anchorage north of Marblehead, Massachusetts, where there is a public beach and boat launch.

Looking for a nature walk? Maine Audubon's Gilsland Farm in Falmouth is a 65-acre sanctuary open during daylight hours. It is a birder’s paradise; there are feeders throughout the property that attract birds of all varieties. Tree and barn swallows nest on site, and bobolinks and Eastern meadowlarks populate the meadows. You can hunker down with binoculars at the two blinds overlooking the Presumpscot River Estuary. Or, you can head to Mackworth Island, just off the coast of Falmouth, accessible by a causeway. The 1.25-mile loop provides excellent views of Casco Bay and the many islands.

The lodging options nearby are plentiful – four miles away is Portland, with numerous hotels, B&Bs and inns to enjoy and Freeport is only 20 minutes north.

For a small town, Falmouth has plenty of dining options! Favorite restaurants include Foreside Tavern & Side Bar, great for a special night out, and the Dockside Grill where great food is paired with a great view of the bay. The Barn at Old Smith Farm is an eclectic seasonal farm-to-table restaurant with additional seating outside. The Town Landing Market is a small grocery store and go-to for a quick bite to eat. They have a huge variety of sandwiches (from lobster rolls to Maine Italians) and convenient pre-made dinners to go. Orchid Thai serves Thai cuisine with local produce and seafood.
