Greenville

Greenville, Maine, is located on Moosehead Lake, the state's largest lake, at 40 miles long and 20 miles wide—perfect for fishing or boating or you can venture to the middle of the lake to hike up to the top of Mount Kineo, with its 763-foot sheer cliff. Here you can also see one of the world’s largest masses of rhyolite, a light-colored volcanic rock found in select spots throughout the state.

Greenville’s location is in the heart of the Maine Highlands, which has drawn outdoor enthusiasts for more than 200 years with its seemingly endless forests and mountains, and numerous lakes and rivers.

Things to Do in Greenville

This area is also one of the best places to spot moose, in the spring moose sightings are in the hundreds. You can hire a guide to take you on a moose safari or other outdoor adventure, such as birding, fishing or dogsledding.

Step aboard the last remaining steamboat in Maine, The Katahdin, exactly like it was in 1914 when it was built, for a leisurely cruise around the lake. The Moosehead Marine Museum honors the lake’s long history. Deep and large, Moosehead is ideal for boating of all sorts. Lily Bay State Park is a great way to experience the lake year-round, with swimming, fishing and boating in the summer and XC skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling in the winter.

Each winter, the annual Wilderness Dog Sled Race starts and ends in Greenville, with fun events for the whole family. Ice fishing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are popular winter activities.

The Greenville Inn is close to Moosehead Lake and downtown, the Moose Mountain Inn is ideally situated trailside for easy snowmobiling and snowshoeing and the Kineo View Motor Lodge offers superb views of the lake and mountains.
