Caught my first striper (striped bass) of the season yesterday while trolling on my Stand Up Paddle (SUP) board with my fly rod. I must say that I’m glad it was a smaller schoolie because anything bigger and I would have been swimming with him.
Fishing on my paddle board adds a great vantage point to site cast or quickly move to an area where the fish may be feeding on bait. However, stability on an SUP is something that comes with practice and experience.
SUP’s offer a great way to enjoy the water here in Maine. From the calm inland lakes to surfing waves on the coastline or heading up the river, paddling offers a unique experience that may just get you hooked, too.
These days there are a great deal of options to purchase or rent SUP’s. I would definitely recommend taking a lesson from a professional to gain some basic knowledge on how to handle a paddle board, as well as navigating the waters you plan to explore. There are several basic points that you need to focus on before venturing out into the open water, such as, stance, paddle stroke, safety gear, and proper equipment.
While sports like paddle boarding may appear to be easy, it does take some practice. Getting on the right equipment and feeling comfortable is very important and will add to your enjoyment. If you’re thinking about heading out and enjoying the waters of Maine on a paddle board check out my surf shop — Mocean Surf Shop located right on the water in Old Orchard Beach to get geared up, or give us a call and we can recommend a paddling shop near your destination.
